Checking and Paying Your MTV (Motor Vehicle Tax) Debt via GİB and e-Devlet
Motorlu Taşıtlar Vergisi (MTV, motor vehicle tax) is paid in two installments a year, in January and July; but to see exactly how much you owe during an installment period — whether a balance remains from a previous installment, and whether there is any gecikme zammı (late-payment surcharge) — you need to run a debt inquiry. Today the entire inquiry and payment process can be done online. In this article we walk through, step by step, how to check and pay your MTV debt through official channels; you can find out when MTV is due in our MTV ne zaman ödenir article, and the general overview in our Motor Vehicle Tax Guide page.
Who can check MTV debt?
The mükellef (taxpayer) for MTV is the person the vehicle is registered to in the traffic registry (Law No. 197 on Motor Vehicle Tax). Debt inquiry is therefore a personal transaction requiring identity verification: there is no "publicly visible by typing in the plate" debt screen, because the information being queried is personal and financial in nature. You can view and pay the MTV debt of vehicles registered in your own name through the official channels below.
Checking and paying MTV via e-Devlet
The most practical route is the "Motorlu Taşıtlar Vergisi Sorgulama ve Kredi Kartı ile Ödeme" ("Motor Vehicle Tax Inquiry and Credit Card Payment") service that GİB (Gelir İdaresi Başkanlığı, Turkey's Revenue Administration) offers through e-Devlet (turkiye.gov.tr). The steps are as follows:
- Go to turkiye.gov.tr and open the service.
- Log in using one of the following methods: e-Devlet password, mobile signature, electronic signature, T.C. identity card, or internet banking.
- The system lists the current MTV debt (including any gecikme zammı, if applicable) for the vehicles registered in your name.
- If you wish, you can pay by credit card directly from the same screen.
The amount shown on screen is the current balance at that moment; because MTV tariffs are re-assessed every year and gecikme zammı accrues over time, rather than quoting a single figure here, you should always go by the current amount shown on the inquiry screen.
GİB İnteraktif Vergi Dairesi
Besides e-Devlet, you can also check and pay your debt directly through GİB's İnteraktif Vergi Dairesi (Interactive Tax Office) (Gelir İdaresi Başkanlığı). İnteraktif Vergi Dairesi is the GİB portal where, using the same identity verification methods, you can log in and carry out debt inquiries, payments, and various other tax transactions. The e-Devlet service and İnteraktif Vergi Dairesi display the same GİB records; which one you use is purely a matter of preference.
Bank, PTT, and other payment channels
MTV can be paid not only online but also through branch and internet/mobile banking channels of participating banks, as well as at PTT (Turkish postal service) offices. Since which banks facilitate MTV collection can change over time, it is practical to check whether your own bank offers this transaction before making a payment. Whichever channel you use to pay, confirming that the debt has cleared via the inquiry screens above is the most reliable way to verify it.
What happens if MTV is not paid on time?
The debt of taxpayers who do not pay their installment on time does not disappear; unpaid MTV is pursued together with gecikme zammı under Law No. 6183 on the Procedure for Collection of Public Receivables. Gecikme zammı is not a fixed amount but a rate set by the state that accrues monthly; so the later the debt is paid, the more the total owed increases. The most practical way to avoid this accumulation is not to miss the January and July installment periods — we cover the payment calendar and how the surcharge accrues in detail in our MTV ne zaman ödenir article. Seeing the balance reset to zero on the inquiry screen after you pay your debt is the surest way to confirm the payment has been reflected in the system; this confirmation is especially worth not skipping if you are paying on the last day.
What to watch for during the inquiry
The MTV debt inquiry is not the only financial obligation on a vehicle; traffic fine (para cezası) debt and the vehicle's registration/seizure (hak mahrumiyeti) status are separate inquiries. Before buying a used car, running these inquiries alongside the MTV debt check lets you see in advance any obligations that could pass on to you; we cover the registration and debt inquiries on e-Devlet together in our ruhsat ve tescil sorgulama article. Also keep in mind that unpaid MTV debt blocks the vehicle's fenni muayene (roadworthiness inspection) and the sale/transfer transaction at the noter (notary) (Law No. 197, Article 13) — so checking and clearing any MTV debt before an inspection or a sale is the surest way to avoid being turned away at the door.
In summary: you can check your MTV debt free of charge, with identity verification, through either e-Devlet or GİB's İnteraktif Vergi Dairesi; you can pay from the same screen by credit card, or through participating bank/PTT channels. After paying, don't forget to confirm on the inquiry screen that the debt has cleared. If you're wondering how MTV is calculated, we've covered that in detail in MTV nasıl hesaplanır, and the payment calendar in MTV ne zaman ödenir.
