When Does Traffic Insurance Renew? Policy Term and Lapse Risk
Zorunlu Trafik Sigortası (Turkey's mandatory motor third-party liability insurance) does not renew itself automatically the moment it expires — the policy has a start date and an end date, and once that date passes, the vehicle is left uninsured. In this article we explain how the policy term works, when the renewal moment actually arrives, what risk an unrenewed policy creates on the day it lapses, and what to watch for so you don't miss the end date. For the general scope of the coverage and how pricing works, you can also check our pillar article, the Zorunlu Trafik Sigortası guide.
How long the policy term is, and when it starts and ends
The term of Zorunlu Trafik Sigortası is not fixed at a specific number by law; the term is simply the period between the start and end dates written on the policy itself. Under Article A.7 ("Start and end of the insurance"), titled as such, of the General Conditions of the Motor Vehicles Compulsory Financial Liability Insurance (ZMSS), the insurance starts and ends on the days written on the policy as the start and end date; if no time is specified on the policy, the insurance starts at 12:00 noon and ends at 12:00 noon, Turkey time.
In market practice this term is, with almost no exceptions, one year: insurance companies issue traffic insurance policies as a standard annual product, so you need to renew your policy every year so that it lands in the same period. The most reliable way to find out exactly which day and hour your own policy ends is to check the date on your policy document, or to query the current status directly — we walked through how to do this step by step in our traffic insurance query article.
When to renew — the logic of early renewal
Unlike vehicle inspection, renewing your traffic insurance early does not pull your next due date forward. In other words, if you renew your policy before its end date, most insurance companies automatically set the start of the new policy to the date the old policy ended; so you neither lose a single day of coverage, nor does your next renewal calendar shift earlier. This is fundamentally different from the TÜVTÜRK (Turkey's official vehicle-inspection operator) mechanism, where an early inspection after the first three-year exemption period pulls the whole cycle forward.
For this reason, leaving traffic insurance to the last day has no practical benefit — quite the opposite, it's risky. The general advice is to start collecting new quotes and complete the renewal at least a few days — ideally one to two weeks — before the policy's end date. That way you have time to compare price quotes across different insurance companies, and you also eliminate the risk of your policy going even a single day without coverage due to an unexpected delay (a payment issue, a missing document, system congestion, and the like). We cover separately what determines the premium and why quotes differ from company to company in our traffic insurance prices article.
The situation is somewhat different if the vehicle's owner has changed (a used-vehicle sale/purchase): under Article C.4 of the ZMSS General Conditions, the insurance contract follows the insured party (i.e., the vehicle's operator); whenever the insured party changes, the existing contract automatically ends as of the date of the change, and the relevant person is refunded the premium on a pro-rata daily basis. In other words, when a vehicle changes hands, the previous owner's policy does not automatically transfer to the new owner — if you've bought a used vehicle, even if a policy appears to be attached to it, you need to check the status and take out a new policy in your own name; otherwise you may end up effectively driving the vehicle uninsured.
The risk of a day without coverage — what happens when the policy term ends
Under Article 91 of Law No. 2918, the Highway Traffic Law (Karayolları Trafik Kanunu), it is a legal obligation for motor vehicle operators to take out compulsory financial liability insurance (traffic insurance); a vehicle without a valid policy cannot be driven on public roads. Unlike inspection, this rule contains no "a few days' grace period": from the moment the policy term ends, the vehicle is considered uninsured in any inspection.
According to the General Directorate of Security (Emniyet Genel Müdürlüğü)'s current 2026 traffic administrative fine guide, the consequences of not taking out compulsory financial liability insurance (KTK Article 91) are as follows:
- Administrative fine: The operator is fined 1,246 TL; if paid within 15 days of notification, it drops by 25% to 934.50 TL.
- Barred from traffic (trafikten men): The vehicle is barred from the road until the deficiency (lack of insurance) is remedied — meaning you cannot put the vehicle back on the road until you take out a new policy.
Beyond this, the financial consequence of having an accident with an uninsured vehicle can be far greater than the fine: since your insurance is not valid, you — not your insurance company — are directly responsible for covering the other party's material and bodily damages, a liability that can reach tens of thousands of Turkish lira depending on the severity of the accident. Uninsured vehicles are also not accepted for inspection; we covered this link between the policy and the inspection calendar in more detail in our vehicle inspection guide.
How to track your end date
The most practical way not to forget your policy's exact end date is to leave it not to a one-off act of remembering, but to automatic tracking. Rather than relying on the date written on your registration or your old policy, it's important to verify the current status by querying it via SBM (Insurance Information and Monitoring Center) or e-Devlet (Turkey's e-government portal), especially if you've bought a used vehicle or changed insurance companies.
OtoPilot records your vehicle's traffic insurance end date and sends you a notification as the deadline approaches, so you don't have to hunt for the policy paper wondering "when was this due again," or risk leaving it to the last day and ending up uninsured. If you'd like to track other vehicle obligations such as inspection, Kasko (comprehensive/collision insurance), and MTV (Motor Vehicles Tax) from the same place, you can check our Zorunlu Trafik Sigortası guide for the full picture.
In summary: your traffic insurance policy's term is generally one year, renewing early carries no downside such as pulling your next due date forward, and a policy that isn't renewed on time can lead to both an administrative fine and serious financial liability in the event of an accident. For this reason, it's safest to leave the end date not to a note somewhere, but to a system that reminds you automatically.
